The road
Tbilisi → Zhinvali reservoir → Ananuri → Pasanauri → Gudauri → Jvari pass (about 2,400 m) → Stepantsminda, and back the same way. Gergeti church is reached by a paved road from the village — no paid 4x4 needed.
Worth stopping
- Jvari monastery or Mtskheta (morning, optional).
- Ananuri fortress.
- Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument above Gudauri.
- Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m).
- Lunch in Stepantsminda; Dariali gorge or the Gveleti waterfall walk if there is time.
Good to know
- Leave Tbilisi by 8:00–9:00; in winter the light goes at about 17:30.
- From December to March the Jvari pass can be closed after snowfall. If it is, we offer Ananuri + Gudauri instead or a free date change.
- Bring a warm layer — Stepantsminda is at 1,700 m and Gergeti at 2,170 m.
- Marshrutkas from Didube are 15 GEL one way; group bus tours start at about $25 per person but with 15–20 people and fixed stops.
