The road
Tbilisi → Zhinvali reservoir → Ananuri → Pasanauri → Gudauri (about 2,000 m) → Jvari pass (about 2,400 m) → Stepantsminda, and back. The Gudauri–Kobi section over the pass is the one the Roads Department closes after heavy snow or avalanche risk; we check its status at 7:00 on the day and message you before pickup.
Worth stopping
- Ananuri fortress over the frozen Zhinvali reservoir.
- Gudauri: the Friendship Monument viewpoint, a hot drink at the top of the resort, or a tandem paraglider flight (paid on site, weather permitting).
- Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 m) — if the church road is icy, a local 4x4 takes you up (paid on site) or you walk 1–1.5 hours.
- Lunch in Stepantsminda: khinkali and mountain cheese.
Good to know
- If the pass is closed in the morning, you choose: Ananuri + Gudauri only for $20 less, a new date, or a full refund.
- Leave Tbilisi at 8:00 — the sun sets around 17:30 in December and January.
- Wear proper boots: Gergeti and the Gudauri viewpoints are snowy and slippery.
- Skiing in Gudauri and want a day off the slopes? Take Gudauri → Kazbegi instead (45 minutes).

Is the road to Kazbegi open in winter?
Most days, yes. After heavy snowfall the Gudauri–Kobi section is closed to all traffic until it is cleared — usually hours, sometimes a couple of days. Gudauri itself is almost always reachable.

Winter tyres and chains, a slower road and a longer working day for the driver. In return you get a 4x4-ready car and a plan B agreed in advance.
