The road
The east–west highway via Mtskheta, Gori and Khashuri, over the Rikoti pass into Imereti, through Samtredia to the coast at Kobuleti and on to Batumi. Most of it is dual carriageway; the Rikoti section is mountain highway with tunnels.
Worth stopping
- Jvari monastery and Mtskheta (UNESCO), 30 min from Tbilisi.
- Uplistsikhe cave town near Gori (+1 h, ticket extra).
- Khachapuri and churchkhela stalls in Imereti.
Good to know
- The train takes about 5.5 hours too (35–75 GEL per person) and is a good option alone; for 3–4 people with luggage a car costs about the same and goes door to door.
