Private Kakheti wine tour by car: Tsinandali, Gremi, Khareba
A full day in the heart of Georgian wine country, on the Telavi side of the Alazani valley: a monastery that still makes its own wine, a 19th-century princely estate, a wine cellar cut into the mountain at Kvareli, and lunch at a family marani where wine ferments in qvevri — clay jars buried in the ground. Your car and driver for the day, so everyone in the group can taste. About 300 km and 10 hours.

The road
Tbilisi → Gombori pass (about 1,600 m, views of the Caucasus) → Telavi → Alaverdi → Gremi → Kvareli → Tsinandali → back via Gurjaani and Sagarejo. In snowy weather we go out and back via Sagarejo instead of the Gombori pass.
Worth stopping
- Alaverdi cathedral (11th century) — the monastery cellar makes wine in qvevri.
- Gremi citadel and the Church of the Archangels, the 16th-century royal capital of Kakheti.
- Khareba winery tunnel in Kvareli — a cellar dug into the mountainside, tasting on site.
- Lunch and tasting at a family marani: qvevri wine, chacha, shoti bread from the tone oven.
- Tsinandali estate of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze — house-museum, gardens and historic wine collection.
Good to know
- Tastings and lunch are paid on site and are not in the car price: a tasting is typically 20–60 GEL per person, a marani lunch with wine 50–90 GEL. We tell you the current price of each stop when you book.
- Pick three or four tasting stops, not six — the day is better and the driver gets you back by evening.
- September–October is rtveli, the grape harvest: the busiest and best time. Book a week ahead.
- Prefer Sighnaghi and Bodbe? That is our other wine day — Sighnaghi & Bodbe.
