Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity without a tour: how to do it yourself

Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) is about 160 km from Tbilisi — roughly 3 hours over the Jvari pass (about 2,400 m). Marshrutkas leave Didube bus station for about 20 GEL per person, but they do not stop where you want and some runs are cut in winter. Gergeti Trinity church sits above the village: a 1.5–2 hour walk up or a short 4x4 ride. The simplest day: a private car with the driver waiting — $190 per sedan for the round trip with stops at Ananuri and the Gudauri viewpoint. Can I visit Kazbegi without a group tour?
Yes. You either take a marshrutka from Didube and walk or hire a local 4x4 in Stepantsminda, or book a private car for the day. Group tours fix the timetable; a car lets you start early and avoid the midday crowd at Gergeti.

How do I get up to Gergeti Trinity church?
From Stepantsminda it is a steep 1.5–2 hour walk, or a 4x4 on the road to the church car park. In a sedan we drop you at the start of the trail; in a 4x4 we drive up when the road is dry.
Is the road to Kazbegi open in winter?
Most days, yes. After heavy snowfall or avalanche risk the Gudauri–Kobi section over the Jvari pass closes until it is cleared — usually hours, sometimes days. The Roads Department announces closures.
What else is worth a stop on the way?
- Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir.
- The Friendship Monument viewpoint above Gudauri.
- Truso or Juta valleys (summer, 4x4 recommended — ask for a quote).
Can I continue from Kazbegi to Russia?
Upper Lars is 11 km north of Stepantsminda. We do not drive across it; see our Upper Lars status page.
Which car should I choose in winter?
From December to March we send 4x4s or cars with winter tyres and chains over the pass. For a family with skis or many bags a minivan is the better choice.
How much does a private car cost?
