The road
The Georgian Military Road past Ananuri and Gudauri, over the Jvari pass and down the Tergi valley to Stepantsminda. In winter the Gudauri–Kobi section over the pass is closed for hours or days after heavy snow or avalanche risk; the Roads Department announces it on georoad.ge.
Worth stopping
- Ananuri fortress, and the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument viewpoint above Gudauri.
Good to know
- From December to March, keep a spare day in your plan: if the pass closes we move your transfer free of charge.
- In winter we only send 4x4s or cars with winter tyres and chains over the pass.

Is the road to Kazbegi open in winter?
Most days, yes. After heavy snowfall the Gudauri–Kobi section is closed to all traffic until it is cleared — usually hours, sometimes a couple of days. You then choose a free new date or a full refund.
