The road
Tbilisi bypass, then the Georgian Military Road (E117) past Mtskheta, the Zhinvali reservoir and Ananuri, and up the Pasanauri valley to the Gudauri hairpins at about 2,000 m. Gudauri lies below the Jvari pass, so it is usually reachable even when the pass itself is closed — but heavy snow and queues of trucks heading to the Russian border at Upper Lars can slow the last 20 km.

- Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir — a 20-minute photo stop is included.

- In winter we send cars on winter tyres and carry chains; for a family with ski bags take a minivan or 4x4.

How long from Tbilisi airport to Gudauri?
About 2.5 hours in good conditions, 3 hours or more after snowfall. The Roads Department (georoad.ge) can restrict traffic during storms; we watch it and tell you.
Is there a shuttle bus?
Marshrutkas to Gudauri leave from Didube station in the city, not from the airport, and taking ski bags is difficult. A private car is door to door.
Can we stop at a supermarket on the way?
Yes — shops in Gudauri are pricier, and a 20-minute stop in Tbilisi or Mtskheta is part of the free stops.
