The road
East on the main highway through Imereti and the Rikoti tunnel, past Khashuri and Gori to Mtskheta, then north on the Georgian Military Road via the Zhinvali reservoir and Ananuri to Gudauri (about 2,000 m). The last 40 km are mountain hairpins; from December to March every car runs on winter tyres with chains on board.
Worth stopping
- Supermarket and ATM in Mtskheta before the mountains — prices in Gudauri are higher (free 20-minute stop).
- Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, if you pass in daylight.
Good to know
- Ski bags: a sedan takes 2 skiers with 2 bags comfortably. Three or four skiers with bags — take a minivan or 4x4. A snowboard bag counts as one ski bag.
- Landing after 22:00? Sleep in Kutaisi and leave at 8:00 — same price, and you climb the hairpins in daylight.
- The Georgian Bus winter shuttle from Kutaisi airport to Gudauri costs about 60 GEL per person and takes about 6 hours with a change. From 3 people a private car costs about the same per head and goes door to door.
