Mestia, the capital of Upper Svaneti, is about 230 km from Kutaisi — around 4.5 hours, the last 130 km on a mountain road up the Enguri valley from Zugdidi. Ushguli, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Europe and part of the UNESCO Upper Svaneti site, is another 45 km beyond Mestia — 1.5–2 hours on a mountain road that we drive only in a 4x4. Marshrutkas run Zugdidi/Kutaisi → Mestia once or twice a day; there is no regular public transport to Ushguli. Our car Kutaisi → Mestia is $310 per sedan; the Ushguli day from Mestia is $210 per 4x4. How do I get from Mestia to Ushguli?
By 4x4 only — the road climbs to about 2,100 m. Our day trip leaves Mestia in the morning, gives you about 3 hours in Ushguli and returns in the afternoon.
Is the road to Svaneti open in winter?
The Zugdidi–Mestia road is open all year but slow in snow; the Ushguli road can close for days after snowfall. In winter keep a spare day and choose a 4x4.
Can I ski in Mestia?
Yes — Hatsvali above Mestia and Tetnuldi about 20 minutes away are ski areas; we drive skiers there from Mestia on request.
Should I fly into Kutaisi for Svaneti?
Kutaisi airport is the closest international airport: our car goes straight from arrivals to Mestia, from $310 per car.
How many days do I need?
Two nights in Mestia is the minimum to see Ushguli without rushing; three if you want a hike to the Chalaadi glacier or Koruldi lakes.
How much does a private car cost?
Per car. Ushguli is 4x4 only (sedan and minivan not offered on that road).
